[It's just Keith and Matt today, since Katie's gone shopping for winter clothes with Mrs. Holt. Keith feels kinda bad, since she was pouting a bit and looked pretty upset that she didn't get to hang out with them...but before they left, Keith could swear she winked at Matt.
Something's going on, and Keith wishes he could read people better cause if there's some secret about him that he's not in on he'd like to know. Eventually, anyway. Right now he and Matt are eating cold pizza and playing video games. Gunther's lying beside Keith, as he's taken to doing basically any time Keith comes over.]
[Keith may not open his heart easily, caring and being cared for may scare him, but when someone manages to get past those barriers and make him feel safe, there's no way he's not going to fight for them.
He found Matt being bullied. Nasty words, followed by a punch in the face, and Keith sprang right into action. So what if the guys were bigger than he was? He's fast, he's strong, and he'd rather get his own ass kicked than let anyone hurt his friend. The only reason he didn't do that to a kid he saw laughing and jeering at Katie last week was that 12-year-olds scare more easily when a just-turned-16-year-old from the Garrison glares at them.
Of course Iverson broke up the fight, and to Keith's relief he actually listened when he explained they were giving Matt a hard time. Keith got in trouble, of course, three days' detention, but at least the jerks got it worse.]
[Matt has no idea what's been up with his sister lately. Every time Keith has come over, she's been extra giggly, even winking at him occasionally. Whenever he tries to ask her what the heck even, she just shrugs with a smirk.
That, however, does not change a darn thing about how much Matt's enjoying just having a chill afternoon with Keith. His feet are up on the coffee table, and he's trying to navigate a tricky spot in the current game, grumbling a bit.
It's not true grumbling, just the fussiness of someone who is tired of this same bit over and over.]
[Keith remembers a few other kids griping about that part of the game. He never got that far, but he can see why they hate it so much.]
Maybe there's a guide somewhere that can help us. I mean, if there's a way to get past that one stupid jump in Super Mario Bros. or a way to beat Air Man...
[At the moment, Matt looks a little worse for the wear. The front of his uniform has drips of blood from his nose that might or might not currently be broken. He looks up, obviously embarrassed and frustrated.]
You'd think that people in a space school wouldn't get on someone's case for liking space.
[He snuffles a bit, determined not to truly break down.]
I think these guys just wanna be tough macho pilots, they don't care about space.
[He shakes his head, helping Matt stand and draping an arm over his shoulder as best he can. Sadly, Keith is the shortest kid in his class and has yet to hit a growth spurt.
Why do you stick up for the dork anyway?! He just feels sorry for you! one of the bullies yells over his shoulder. Keith turns to flip him off, making a nasty face before turning his attention back to Matt.]
Of course I do. You're one of the only friends I've got, I'd rather get detention forever than let them mess with you.
Besides, you stood up for me when Sanda thought I was the one who started that food fight last week and I wasn't even in the cafeteria.
There's a way to beat him, and I'm sure the internet's got it. [Keith fetches the laptop and hits up Google; there's a lot of chatter about this boss. Guides, begging for help, rants...] Okay, let's see...fire spells, those are supposed to work. And your shield, how much defense does it have forged to it?
[The guy's about to yell again before Iverson yanks on his arm, telling him he's looking at another week's suspension if he doesn't shut up. For once, Keith is grateful for Iverson, though not as much as he is for Matt's rebuttal.]
Well, it goes both ways. You never did anything to those jerks, and if they keep bothering you, they're gonna have to answer to me.
Ok. I got fire, but... my shield's pretty weak. Only one defense level. Maybe I should go back to the last town, I think there was a quest to level it up.
[He goes back to the last town and starts talking to an NPC.]
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to actually go on a quest?
Yeah, that might be a good idea. And there's a forge, if we can get stronger materials.
[Good thing they're not on a time crunch to beat this boss.]
When I was little, sometimes I would. Like having to fly across the galaxy to save a king, or collect sparkling stones to keep a village from burning down. Or even find a mysterious powerful book for whatever reason.
[Keith helps out where he can, pointing out spots Matt might have missed]
That's an awesome dream. And maybe someday you will...I mean, my dad believed there's life on other planets, and Shiro says it's not out of the question. So...just keep dreaming!
Nah, it's just review for stuff I already know. I'd rather stay with you.
[He doesn't get that, Matt's a good kid and he always follows the rules. And Dr. Holt's getting sick of it, too, he's mentioned getting Sanda or Iverson to have a word with those instructors if it keeps up.
Maybe he can also get Sanda to stop picking on Keith. But it's not likely.]
If there is, I know you'll be the one to find it. You're one of the smartest guys in the Garrison, and one day you'll be the guy famous for discovering aliens.
[Keith leans against him, smiling, one of his hands moving to pet Gunther beside him.]
I guess people hate you for being related to someone who works here? Kids at my school would get that sometimes, like a girl whose mom worked as a lunch lady or a guy whose mom was the math teacher. And Shiro's the reason I'm even here and he's like my big brother. What's that big word for it...nepotism, yeah. They think us kids with family around get it all even when we don't, so they wanna make us feel bad about it.
[He laughs bitterly]
At least some people like you, though. And some of the teachers. I'd be mad if the whole place treated you as bad as they treat me. No one deserves that.
Still. I know you're always in trouble, but... not because of me.
[Matt sighs.]
Dad told me once that he made sure they judged my application blind, so that no one would think it was just him putting his kid in. I know Katie'll be amazing when she applies, and I'm sure it'll be the same thing.
[He stops, wiping a bit more blood off of his nose.]
Me? I mean, I'm flattered, but Shiro's already the best pilot who ever graduated the Garrison. You'd pick me over him? [Yeah, Keith may be blushing as he leans closer]
