[It's just Keith and Matt today, since Katie's gone shopping for winter clothes with Mrs. Holt. Keith feels kinda bad, since she was pouting a bit and looked pretty upset that she didn't get to hang out with them...but before they left, Keith could swear she winked at Matt.
Something's going on, and Keith wishes he could read people better cause if there's some secret about him that he's not in on he'd like to know. Eventually, anyway. Right now he and Matt are eating cold pizza and playing video games. Gunther's lying beside Keith, as he's taken to doing basically any time Keith comes over.]
[Matt has no idea what's been up with his sister lately. Every time Keith has come over, she's been extra giggly, even winking at him occasionally. Whenever he tries to ask her what the heck even, she just shrugs with a smirk.
That, however, does not change a darn thing about how much Matt's enjoying just having a chill afternoon with Keith. His feet are up on the coffee table, and he's trying to navigate a tricky spot in the current game, grumbling a bit.
It's not true grumbling, just the fussiness of someone who is tired of this same bit over and over.]
[Keith may not open his heart easily, caring and being cared for may scare him, but when someone manages to get past those barriers and make him feel safe, there's no way he's not going to fight for them.
He found Matt being bullied. Nasty words, followed by a punch in the face, and Keith sprang right into action. So what if the guys were bigger than he was? He's fast, he's strong, and he'd rather get his own ass kicked than let anyone hurt his friend. The only reason he didn't do that to a kid he saw laughing and jeering at Katie last week was that 12-year-olds scare more easily when a just-turned-16-year-old from the Garrison glares at them.
Of course Iverson broke up the fight, and to Keith's relief he actually listened when he explained they were giving Matt a hard time. Keith got in trouble, of course, three days' detention, but at least the jerks got it worse.]
[At the moment, Matt looks a little worse for the wear. The front of his uniform has drips of blood from his nose that might or might not currently be broken. He looks up, obviously embarrassed and frustrated.]
You'd think that people in a space school wouldn't get on someone's case for liking space.
[He snuffles a bit, determined not to truly break down.]
[Keith doesn't get sick very easily, so when he does, it hits him hard. He remembers catching colds or other bugs in elementary school, but Dad was still around to take care of him. After that, somehow, he just...never got sick. Maybe a cough or a sniffle now and then, but nothing that'd keep him out of school.
He wasn't feeling great when he woke up this morning, but he went to the Garrison anyway. Admiral Sanda and Iverson don't give anyone sick days unless they're contagious or dying, and all Keith has is a little cough.
A little cough that turns into a big one.
And sneezing. And a runny nose.
By his fourth class, kids are looking at him like he's one big germ factory, except for resident Nice Dude Hunk Garrett who keeps asking if he's okay. I'm fine, he keeps saying, until the teacher finally sends him out of the room. Get out before you make everyone else sick!
Not even the slightest bit of concern for Keith. Not that he's surprised. He staggers down the halls, towards the infirmary, shivering and coughing. He has to stop and rest several times, and he doesn't even make it there by the time class lets out and he's lost in a sea of other cadets.
[He's used to this dream. A burningbuilding, Dad disappearing into the flames, the screams, the smoke, standing in front of a headstone. Sometimes it's a house, sometimes it's an office, but tonight it's the shack. The shack burns to the ground, Dad with it, and Keith's lost everything he ever had of him.
The tears are streaming down his cheeks before he even wakes up.]
No...no, no, no, Dad, come back, don't leave, Dad! Dad!
[Keith hasn't been trick-or-treating since he was ten. Dad used to drive them into town, park the car, and take him to houses he knew gave out good stuff. It's something he's missed, even if he tried to convince himself he's outgrown it. But he and Matt are taking Katie trick-or-treating, dressed as "their" Star Wars characters; Keith even feels like a real Han Solo in the role of Katie and Matt's bodyguard.
And when they get home? Pizza, scary movies and a few Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episodes. That's the only part of the new Simpsons seasons he'll acknowledge, because scary is always relevant.]
[On one hand, Matt is rather thrilled to be going out with his sister and Keith. On the other, he's not entirely sure why he has to be out in public as Leia. Katie insisted on it, and said there was no way she could pull off Leia.
So Matt's there, white dress, silver belt, and a rather prominent wig with cinnamon bun hair at the sides. It takes him a bit, but after none too long, he gets into it, even taking Keith's arm at one point. Hey, he's getting into character, right?]
[When he'd met Matt after school to walk home earlier, Keith had noticed his grumpy demeanor, how quiet he was, how he'd dragged his feet and held his clenched fists at his side as they walked. Keith's first instinct was to check him for bruises, but Matt had quickly told him it wasn't anything like that, not this time.
Keith is no stranger to the crappy mood Matt is obviously in. Shiro would meet him after classes, take him home, ask him what was wrong and Keith would refuse to say anything until they were alone; going with that experience, Keith keeps his mouth shut until the two are home.]
[Matt's used to people challenging him on just about everything except his science. Today, everyone was making fun of him for maintaining Pluto's planetary status.
It just hurt more than being teased for his glasses or his noodle status. Once they get home, he goes upstairs, flopping backwards on his bed and just staring at the glow stars on the ceiling.]
[This is it. The day Keith's been on pins and needles thinking about, happy for Matt getting a chance to fulfill his dreams and depressed because with Matt and Shiro gone, he'll be all alone at the Garrison. Katie still isn't set to apply for another year, otherwise they could be outcasts together.
But it's so much more than missing a friend, and it's taken Keith this long to realize it. Even after the Holts took him in as their foster child, Matt's so much more than a brother, more than his best friend. The first person other than Shiro to get past his walls and accept him even at his worst. The one who reached out to him when he felt unwanted and alone.
It's so much more intense than his crush on Shiro ever felt, and he hates himself for realizing it now, when Matt's going to be away for so long. But he's trying to keep a smile on his face, for everyone's sake. He's not the only one who's going to miss him. And Sam, and Shiro, for that matter.]
[Matt doesn't really know what to do with himself. Most of the attention is on his father and Shiro, which is just fine with him.
He's hanging around with his mother and Katie, people watching and a bit bemused. There's a very wry smile on his face, and he's more than a bit unreadable.
He's excited, so very nervous, and more than a bit conflicted. He's realized in the past months that he loves Keith as much more than a brother, and now he has to say goodbye. He's not sure what this even means, especially as everyone seems to call Keith his actual brother.]
[Keith and Matt having gym together this term is usually a good thing. Keith always picks Matt for his team or as his partner, but this time the teacher decided to randomize things for boxing practice. Matt got paired with Keith's archnemesis James Griffin, who beat up on him so hard the teacher actually called him out on it.
That's not enough for Keith. He's up against James next, and if anyone thinks he's gonna just let what happened slide they're fucking wrong.
Well, well, well, if it isn't Mr. Troublemaker. Too bad this is the one class he's allowed to hit people in, James. Keith's first jab is so sharp it actually knocks James off his feet, and he doesn't let up from there.]
[Matt's not in very good shape, but probably only Keith can tell that. He was about two hits away from a knockout, his nose is bleeding (again, what the heck is it with his nose???) and he's not entirely certain that he doesn't have a rib that was at least cracked.
He looks over at Keith, and some utter panic crosses his face.]
[Keith, it's Matt's turn to pick up the groceries this week. Why don't you come with him, I'll give him some extra money so you can pick out your favorite foods for us to have in the house.
It's been exactly four days since the orphanage officially signed Keith over as the Holts' foster child. Sometimes it feels pretty much the same as always, since he was over at their house so much anyway, but so many little things remind him that this is a major change. The table being set for five, tossing his laundry in with theirs instead of doing it separately, and now this.
He watches Matt take the money and quietly follows him out the door, already wondering which of his favorite things won't set them back too much.]
[Matt grins at Keith and grabs some keys from a hook, beckoning him to come with him.]
So. I know the way your mind works, and I know how Mom works. Don't you dare start mathing what's cheapest. Just... get what you like, ok? It's not a problem.
[One of the few decent memories of the orphanage Keith has is Christmas, where the caretakers and the staff made sure the kids had a good time even if they couldn't get a big tree and dinner was usually frozen Boston Market or Swanson meals. Thanks to the charity drives around the time of year Keith got some good stuff, and they always got to watch the old standbys.
But nothing can compare to a real family Christmas, in a real home with people who love and want him. He gets to do all the things people do with their families.
Like decorating the tree.
It's still bare as it stands in the den, Keith is waiting patiently until they can put up the decorations together. And he knows they have plenty. But he's so grateful to the Holts, wants to really do his part to make this a great holiday.
That's why he's sitting up in the den at sunrise, stringing popcorn and dried berries onto a thread. And unfortunately, he's not that great with a needle.]
Ow.
[That's the...fifth time he's pricked his finger? He stops for a moment to suck on it.]
Matt comes into the room, running a hand through his hair, and pausing in the door, just watching Keith for a moment, a small smile on his face. It's really refreshing to see how much Keith is just settling in.
[The math test isn't for two more days, and Keith gets by well enough in that class. But after the last A he brought home and how proud Sam and Colleen were, he desperately wants to get another. Getting such a high mark felt good, made him feel smart for once, even the hard-to-please teacher was proud of him.
He's not overly fond of the material, and it's harder than the last unit, but he's determined to understand it. Even if it means still sitting up at the kitchen table, half-asleep as he stares at the same page over and over.]
[Matt's been working on things for a while, mostly biochem, losing himself in the information.
He glances up at one point, and is pretty sure that he sees Keith almost nod off. Glancing at the clock, he winces, realizing how late it is. Standing up, he goes over and puts a hand on Keith's shoulder, concern on his face.]
[For weeks, he's been hearing all about the mission to Kerberos, mostly from Matt and Shiro, and he'd been excited. Whoever went to Kerberos would come back with hard proof that Pluto is so a planet, and that'd shut up those nonbelievers once and for all.
Today, they're finally announcing who they picked to go, and Keith's barely been able to concentrate. He knows Matt's been excited about the whole idea, hoping he gets to be one of the chosen, but Keith's been sort of split on the whole thing. He wants Matt to go, this is his dream, but if he's picked he and Keith will be separated. And Keith isn't too crazy about that idea.]
[Matt's practically vibrating in his seat. There was going to be a PA announcement any moment about the third member of the Kerberos squad. The fact that Shiro and his father are going is a poorly-kept secret. Some people are miffed that Shiro's going in spite of his physical condition, but most are over-the-top supportive. He is, as Matt's remarked the Garrison Poster Boy.
So, when the PA comes on, it's Admiral Senada announcing (a bit begrudgingly in Shiro's case) that Dr. Sam Holt, Takashi Shirogane and... Matthew Holt going to Kerberos. Matt gasps, just staring at the PA. He heard that wrong, right?
People around him are staring and complaining that Matt's only going because his father is the commander, and Matt just wants to sink into the chair and disappear.]
[...a discipline case, according to every previous teacher you've had, and you're only here because Shirogane vouched for you, Admiral Sanda is lecturing as Keith stands cross-armed in the hallway. So I have every reason to believe you were involved in that food fight! I'm not sure how you cleaned up so quickly, but-
He wasn't even in the cafeteria when a bunch of other cadets started pelting each other with mashed potatoes and fish sticks, but of course the fact that he just happened to be walking near the place made him guilty. Because he's Keith Kogane, the disciplinary disaster, the bad seed. Iverson may be hard on everyone, but he's sure Sanda has a special hatred for him.
It really stings this time because Keith's really been trying to behave himself and work harder. Even the teachers who didn't like him are noticing, but to Sanda he's still the same brat he always was.]
[Standing to the side, perfectly at attention, is Matt, saluting crisply. Just because he doesn't bother with military formality most of the time, doesn't mean he can't.]
[The fact that he'd had an overall decent day at the Garrison makes the sudden onset of crippling loneliness even worse. The caretakers ignored him more than usual, even when he offered to help with the chores. You'd just be in the way, finish your homework. None of the kids closer to his age wanted to hang out, either, claiming they were "too busy."
Even if he's not exactly best friends with them, it still hurts.
He couldn't sleep, either, and when he did, he kept having nightmares about the fire again. His roommates are fast asleep, the only caretaker still awake is looking in on a little girl with even worse sleeping problems.
He's never seen the orphanage as a family, but tonight it hits him just how alone he is here. He's the second oldest, and at fifteen he's not old enough to train as a caretaker, not like Franz is.
Fighting back tears, he throws his coat on over his pajamas and shoves his feet into his sneakers, sneaking out the back. There's one place he knows he's welcome, and he runs there.]
[In contrast, Matt hasn't had the greatest day, not that he's ever going to tell anyone. His bullies were out in full force, and he was sure that someone was copying off of him in physics, but he was the one who got yelled at for 'letting' them copy.
He'd eaten dinner, but retreated up to his room, not even letting Katie in. After finishing homework, he curled up in his bed with a book to just stare at for a while.
Sleep is not going to happen any time soon, he's pretty sure.]
[The paperwork is pretty much all filled out, but there's one more hurdle: The actual meeting with the orphanage administrators and staff. Logically, Keith should have no reason to worry: the Holts are a functional and wholesome family and Keith's just turned sixteen, too old to be living here anyway. But he's still worried something's going to wreck this, because he's still not used to the idea that he could belong anywhere forever.
He's waiting outside the conference room with Matt and Katie, sitting stiffly on a bench in a good dress shirt and slacks Matt loaned him. Hands folded in his lap. Occasionally listening for mentions of him.]
[Matt's worried as well. He knows that his family's pretty much anything that an agency could want, but considering how big of idiots the orphanage staff have been, he's not holding his breath.
Sure, he believes fully in his parents' powers of stubbornness, but bureaucracy has a tendency to be utterly idiotic. Taking a breath, he leans against Keith.]
[It's VERY generous of the Holts to let so many kids hang out at their place during this freak snowstorm. Shiro can count at least three troublemakers and a few pairs of kids who don't get along very well, plus Matt and his little sister Katie and the dog hanging around. It's probably a good thing he and Adam are here to help out.
He knows he can't just take Keith aside and sit with him while Adam does most of the work. He's almost relieved when Keith approaches a group of kids to talk, but then they start sneering at him and the McClain kid starts laughing at him and Keith's storming out of the room before Shiro can even blink.]
Lance. That wasn't nice.
[Oh, come on, not our fault he's a dork who can't take a joke!]
[Adam's never been too fond of chaos in a small space. He likes his life neat and orderly, and the Holt household has never been either.
He's not about to turn down a request for help, but he's not really the happiest about it. The McClain kid, however, that was not in his job description today, and frankly, the last thing he wanted to deal with. Glaring slightly, he crosses his arms.]
Your reactions are your fault, however. There is no need to be a bully.
[Keith's success with school has always been varied. He loves to learn, but his grades usually depended on whether or not he liked what was being taught, or if he was good at it right away. Multiplication in 3rd grade was the best, he got perfect marks on his homework and lots of As. And in English, if he liked the book, he'd read ahead and hope the teacher didn't find out.
His up-and-down grades aren't going to cut it at the Garrison, though. He's mostly been getting by, but history's always been so boring to him and his teacher's not too impressed with his stream of Cs. Shiro and Adam are always saying you can do better but right this chapter's so boring and he's just no good at remembering what happened on what date.
Keith sighs, going back over the first page yet again. He's been at this for half an hour and he wonders if he'll ever be done with it.]
In which Sam Holt makes his mun's complaints about history teaching.
[Mostly without warning, Sam slides into a chair across from him. He's seen Keith struggling, and he's definitely worried.]
Did you know that is the most boring textbook in the entire Garrison? It has the dubious honor of taking a fascinating subject and making it dryer than Sanda's cookies.
[What's worse than a bad day for Keith? Matt having a bad day. For Keith, he'd been trying to take notes in class while McClain kept annoying him, asking for answers, pulling on his hair, just generally being a butthead. When Keith told him, sharply, to knock it off, the asshole decided to play victim and get Adam on his side. Keith, you're usually much better than this. One more outburst and I'll send you to Sanda's office! And of course everyone whispered and snickered at the troublemaker getting put in his place. Again.
Then, after classes let out, he found Matt lying on the floor with his books strewn everywhere, the usual gang of bullies laughing and mocking him. And fucking Iverson standing there, not doing a damn thing, his face the picture of Matt deserves it for being Matt and existing.
Keith was already pissed about McClain's bullshit, but now? He's about to recreate the beatdown scene from A Christmas Story, only with more coherent swearing and possibly knocking a few heads together. And that INCLUDES Iverson.]
[Matt's not sure what cosmic force he pissed off today, but everything just seemed to go from bad to worse. All he'd had this morning was Iverson, taking his class on an extended training exercise.
Now, rubber-legged and tired and sweaty, he was trying to get to his things together when one of his usual bullies tripped him, and he went face-down on the ground, scattering books everywhere. Looking up, he just shakes his head at Keith.]
Keith... please... no. Just... don't let them pull you into it.
[Keith's stopped bothering to count the hours left before Matt, Sam, and Shiro leave tomorrow. That number only goes down, and it's depressing. His father figure, his brother figure, and the best friend he's sure he's in love with are going to be gone for so long and he's not sure how he'll survive the Garrison without them.
Matt had shown him and Katie a special code for sending messages while he's in space, so he'll at least get to talk to him. But won't be the same.
The dinner table is abuzz with talk of the mission. Shiro's there, too, though he won't tell anyone why he's with the Holts instead of spending his last night with Adam. Only Keith knows, and it's not his explanation to give.
I wish I could go with you guys, Katie says. She's sulking and quiet; even though she's made a few actual friends at school recently she's still not super close to them. Matt's still the best friend she has, and she still gets picked on occasionally.
Keith feels her. The three of them have been inseparable for the past few years, and it's not gonna be the same without the third member of their trio.]
Me too.
[He's picking at his plate, even though he likes pretty much all of what Colleen's fixed.]
[Matt's emotions are everywhere. He's cracking jokes with his dad, he's commiserating with his sister, and he's trying to give Keith some encouraging smiles.
It's hard, though. He's excited, nervous, and worried about his family that he's leaving behind. Well, family and the person he loves more than anything. Mostly he's trying to convince himself it's just another night with the people he cares the most about.]
[It's after dark, and Keith's starving. Jason had a bad day at school, a bully stole his lunch money and he wasn't allowed to have a snack before he finished his homework because Franz was left in charge of the kids and he went on a power trip. So of course, Keith gave Jason half of his dinner and his dessert.
It's a habit. Jason's the only one he really has much of a relationship with even though Keith's older. He's glad Jason's feeling better, but it doesn't take away from the gnawing pangs in Keith's stomach. Sighing, he picks up his phone and texts Matt.]
Hungry. Jason got his lunch money stolen, Franz is an ass. Wanted to be nice, but now my stomach is mad at me. Wish it'd shut up.
[Matt's up doing some homework when he gets Keith's text. Thankfully, everyone is either in their rooms or, in his father's case, still at the Garrison. He texts back quickly, while grabbing a picnic basket from the hall closet.]
[He didn't know what he was thinking. Or rather, he wasn't thinking, because Naxzela was about to go off and everyone he cared about would be killed if he didn't do something, anything. And ramming the planet with his ship seemed like the only thing to do at the time.
When the shield was broken by Lotor and Keith realized he was still alive, it didn't take long for the ramifications to set in. He'd thought he was doing the right thing by telling Matt, because then he wouldn't have to find it out from someone else, but the echoes of Matt's panicked shouts ring in his head and the image of his horrified eyes haunt his mental vision.
He loves me so much. After all he's done for me, how could I be such an idiot?
He lets the rest of the team hug him senseless for a few minutes before wriggling away and hurrying to his room to find Matt. An apology isn't enough, but Matt deserves to hear it.]
[Matt was helping Coran with the ship when he saw what Keith was doing. He'd shrieked, and tried everything that he could to stop Keith's ship or make it go off course, but nothing worked.
And then.... Lotor saved him. Frankly, Matt thinks, Lotor saved more than Keith. The thought of losing him like that, in a stupid self-sacrificing way would probably have almost killed him.
Once everything was over, Matt ran back to his and Keith's room, shaking a bit, and curling up in the blankets that smell like him. Yes, he's being irrational and anxious, but he's just overwhelmed right now, and starting to get some flashbacks.]
[The tree's decorated, cookies are made, and all the gifts bought and wrapped. Now Keith's getting to know another part of big family Christmases: relatives. He's heard a bit about the extended Holt family before; Grandma is old-fashioned but not to the point of nasty about it and knits every Christmas present ever, one of the uncles met Garry Shandling in a Chinese restaurant once and got a selfie with him, one of the aunts claims she almost got the part of the wife on Eight Simple Rules.
He's heard a lot about a cousin named Kara, though, one both Matt and Katie find super annoying. She tries to cause fights between me and Matt sometimes. She's around your age and she's jealous cause she's no good at anything. Keith already doesn't like this girl, she sounds an awful lot like McClain at the Garrison.]
[Matt's never been a huge fan of the Entire Family Christmas. He prefers the times that schedules can't really connect and it's just their family.
He's sitting at his desk, staring at a particularly stubborn piece of homework and sighs. Hopefully it won't be too bad and he and Keith can sneak out to stargaze or something.]
Because they deserve some happy fluffy times
Something's going on, and Keith wishes he could read people better cause if there's some secret about him that he's not in on he'd like to know. Eventually, anyway. Right now he and Matt are eating cold pizza and playing video games. Gunther's lying beside Keith, as he's taken to doing basically any time Keith comes over.]

That, however, does not change a darn thing about how much Matt's enjoying just having a chill afternoon with Keith. His feet are up on the coffee table, and he's trying to navigate a tricky spot in the current game, grumbling a bit.

Keith is no stranger to the crappy mood Matt is obviously in. Shiro would meet him after classes, take him home, ask him what was wrong and Keith would refuse to say anything until they were alone; going with that experience, Keith keeps his mouth shut until the two are home.]
no subject
It just hurt more than being teased for his glasses or his noodle status. Once they get home, he goes upstairs, flopping backwards on his bed and just staring at the glow stars on the ceiling.]

Launch Day
But it's so much more than missing a friend, and it's taken Keith this long to realize it.
And Sam, and Shiro, for that matter.]
no subject
He's hanging around with his mother and Katie, people watching and a bit bemused. There's a very wry smile on his face, and he's more than a bit unreadable.
He's excited, so very nervous, and more than a bit conflicted. He's realized in the past months that he loves Keith as much more than a brother, and now he has to say goodbye. He's not sure what this even means, especially as everyone seems to call Keith his actual brother.]

the one where James is a douchebag
That's not enough for Keith. He's up against James next, and if anyone thinks he's gonna just let what happened slide they're fucking wrong.
Well, well, well, if it isn't Mr. Troublemaker. Too bad this is the one class he's allowed to hit people in, James. Keith's first jab is so sharp it actually knocks James off his feet, and he doesn't let up from there.]

He looks over at Keith, and some utter panic crosses his face.]

Grocery Shopping
It's been exactly four days since the orphanage officially signed Keith over as the Holts' foster child. Sometimes it feels pretty much the same as always, since he was over at their house so much anyway, but so many little things remind him that this is a major change. The table being set for five, tossing his laundry in with theirs instead of doing it separately, and now this.
He watches Matt take the money and quietly follows him out the door, already wondering which of his favorite things won't set them back too much.]

First Family Christmas

Big News
Today, they're finally announcing who they picked to go, and Keith's barely been able to concentrate. He knows Matt's been excited about the whole idea, hoping he gets to be one of the chosen, but Keith's been sort of split on the whole thing. He wants Matt to go, this is his dream, but if he's picked he and Keith will be separated. And Keith isn't too crazy about that idea.]

People around him are staring and complaining that Matt's only going because his father is the commander, and Matt just wants to sink into the chair and disappear.]

Accusations
He wasn't even in the cafeteria when a bunch of other cadets started pelting each other with mashed potatoes and fish sticks, but of course the fact that he just happened to be walking near the place made him guilty. Because he's Keith Kogane, the disciplinary disaster, the bad seed. Iverson may be hard on everyone, but he's sure Sanda has a special hatred for him.
It really stings this time because Keith's really been trying to behave himself and work harder. Even the teachers who didn't like him are noticing, but to Sanda he's still the same brat he always was.]

Anytime you need me
Even if he's not exactly best friends with them, it still hurts.

He'd eaten dinner, but retreated up to his room, not even letting Katie in. After finishing homework, he curled up in his bed with a book to just stare at for a while.

Snowstorm - The Other Side
The thing is, though, that Keith's here, too. His protégé has nowhere else to go, the orphanage is too far away from the Garrison to walk, and he kind of got swept up into the chaos.
Re: Snowstorm - The Other Side
He's not about to turn down a request for help, but he's not really the happiest about it. The McClain kid, however, that was not in his job description today, and frankly, the last thing he wanted to deal with. Glaring slightly, he crosses his arms.]

History sucks (Sam+Keith thread)
His up-and-down grades aren't going to cut it at the Garrison, though. He's mostly been getting by, but history's always been so boring to him and his teacher's not too impressed with his stream of Cs. Shiro and Adam are always saying you can do better but right this chapter's so boring and he's just no good at remembering what happened on what date.
Keith sighs, going back over the first page yet again. He's been at this for half an hour and he wonders if he'll ever be done with it.]
In which Sam Holt makes his mun's complaints about history teaching.
Did you know that is the most boring textbook in the entire Garrison? It has the dubious honor of taking a fascinating subject and making it dryer than Sanda's cookies.

Blanket forts make everything better
Then, after classes let out, he found Matt lying on the floor with his books strewn everywhere, the usual gang of bullies laughing and mocking him. And fucking Iverson standing there, not doing a damn thing, his face the picture of Matt deserves it for being Matt and existing.
Keith was already pissed about McClain's bullshit, but now? He's about to recreate the beatdown scene from A Christmas Story, only with more coherent swearing and possibly knocking a few heads together. And that INCLUDES Iverson.]

Now, rubber-legged and tired and sweaty, he was trying to get to his things together when one of his usual bullies tripped him, and he went face-down on the ground, scattering books everywhere. Looking up, he just shakes his head at Keith.]

The night before the launch
Me too.
[He's picking at his plate, even though he likes pretty much all of what Colleen's fixed.]
no subject
It's hard, though. He's excited, nervous, and worried about his family that he's leaving behind. Well, family and the person he loves more than anything. Mostly he's trying to convince himself it's just another night with the people he cares the most about.]

After Keith almost did something very stupid
Apologies for this idiot. :(
And then....

He's heard a lot about a cousin named Kara, though, one both Matt and Katie find super annoying. She tries to cause fights between me and Matt sometimes.
