Galra Keith AU
This post is for the AU where Keith looks Galra, and Matt's in the Blade
[Today's the day. Mom and Kolivan have been talking about an upcoming meeting with some team who's also fighting against Zarkon, and how they hope to form an alliance with its leaders. Keith, who's only ever ventured outside the HQ for missions and has never gotten to know anyone beyond the organization who isn't Matt, is quite nervous.
He's not entirely sure why he's coming along, either. Matt is their tech guy, Kolivan is their leader, Thace and Ulaz and Mom are important warriors, but Keith is just...Keith. He's never really led any missions himself, plus he's a half-breed. Still, he was asked to accompany them, so he didn't fight it.]

[In some ways, Matt has no clue why he's tagging along on this one. Supposedly this other team's tech person has been working on some spy tech of their own, and they're hoping to combine it with his. Sure. He just doesn't know if he's going to be able to explain his... odd method of encryption to someone from a planet he's never heard of.
However, most importantly at the moment, he can tell Keith's nervous. Reaching over, he squeezes his hand gently.]

[A mall, Matt called the building once they walked in.
Keith's pretty much what at the whole thing, he's never been to a mall or a shopping center thanks to the Blade procuring their supplies through...other means. Plus, who has time for shopping when you're trying to take down an empire from the inside?
But they needed a lens for the Teladuv, Allura said, and this was the only place they could get one. Coran had talked on and on about finding the lenses on Swap Moons and how Allura was NOT to set foot on one thanks to the space pirates looking to rob people of all their GAC, but it looks like whatever a Swap Moon is, it's this "mall" thing now.

[Matt's not entirely certain about the disguises. He feels like an absolute idiot in the getup that Coran put him in. Really, he's almost certain that he's dressed like some sort of clown.

[The time to confront Zarkon is drawing close, they're almost ready with their plans and their equipment and they've been training almost nonstop. It's been harder to find time to be alone with his boyfriend, but Keith finished his training with Kolivan and Shiro early tonight.
He's with Matt now, and he knows exactly what he wants to do tonight.]

[Matt has been going over things in ships and in the lions with Pidge, and at that particular moment, he's sitting on the floor in their room, working on his datapad, uploading a few more protections to their communications system, lost in his thoughts.]
[The day has come, Kolivan thinks as he and two other Blades await Matt's arrival. Today, the human will undergo a trial that has injured and even killed many Galra in the past, only because the strength of the human's love for his soul mate stirred something in Kolivan that was thought long-dead, there will be no death.
I'm going soft, Kolivan sighs, remind me never, ever to make this exception again.]

[Matt lingered in kissing Keith that morning, letting him go to his training, and then putting on the specific uniform and grabbing the knife that he was quickly becoming extremely fond of.
Standing in front of Kolivan, he squares his shoulders and takes a breath.]

[Most of the time, it doesn't bother Keith too much that he's never met his father, the stories Mom tells him are nice and she always promises he'll meet him someday. But other times, even she wonders if that'll ever happen, the war's still going on and even after they beat Zarkon they'll have a lot of cleanup to do.
And then there are the moments of sad jealousy, whenever Matt talks about his dad. Keith doesn't hold it against Matt, he knows very well the situation with the Holts, but Matt knows his dad, has a good relationship with him.
The Paladins talk about their families, too, even Allura and Shiro who lost their fathers. Lance's dad tells all kinds of bad jokes, Hunk's dad can practically lift a truck with his bare hands, Adam's dad is in MENSA.
All Keith knows about his father is what mom tells him. He's never been there to watch Heath Kogane put out a fire or fail at making a salad, never heard his Texan accent.

[The food fight brought them together as a team just in time to face Myzax, where Shiro's memories of the arena actually came in handy for once. Knowing the beast's patterns and weak spots gave them the perfect opening to beat him.
But there's still some unfinished business. [Ever since he broke up with Takashi, nothing's felt right. Adam knew from the moment his former fiance lifted off that he'd made what was probably the worst decision of not only his life, but several others' as well.
He was able to keep it together thanks to the Holt kid's constant tweets about the mission, as well as whatever else he can glean from the other officers. However, when he heard (on TV, like everyone including Colleen Holt) that the mission was lost due to pilot error, he put his walls up. Every last wall he could manage, and in the process went from one of the most beloved Garrison professors to a bit of a hardass.
Even when Holt's daughter was thrown out and then came back (looking exactly like her brother and calling herself Pidge Gunderson, of all things, how did no one notice that?), insisting that there wasn't any evidence of a crash, he didn't want to believe it, didn't want to see what was right there.
Takashi coming back broken and down an arm didn't really help either. Everything came flooding back, how much he loves him, how much he's not cut out to be a nursemaid, and how much it's going to absolutely kill him to watch his strong, beloved Takashi just... waste away.
All of their so-called bonding experiments were awful. It seemed all they succeeded in doing was reminding him of how much he adores Takashi, and how much everything hurts. At this moment, he's lying flopped on his bed, staring at the ceiling, and trying to will himself not to think. He doesn't move when he hears Takashi at the door.]

[It's the end of a long work day, gathering intel and mapping out battle plans, and Keith's worried. Matt's seemed kinda out of it, not very focused and rather depressed. The others are curious, too, but of course Kolivan had to scold him because even if they know he cares deep down, he's still Kolivan. Blade Dad expects the best from his family.
But Matt didn't even argue. He's just been...quiet. Disinterested. He mostly stuck by Keith and didn't say or do much unless asked to.
Is he sick? No, he'd be in worse shape if he was...

[Matt's sitting on the end of the bed, staring at a datapad. On the pad are coordinates to a smallish blue planet at the ass-end of the universe. There's no video or photo, just a few lines of text that say this 'blue planet' has never been colonized by outsiders, and nothing is known about the 'primitive' local species.
Glancing up, he manages about half of a smile.]

[I could have lost him, he almost died, he almost let himself die just to protect everyone, Prince Lotor saved him, Matt almost died, Matt almost died. It's a whirl of the same thoughts in his head, it's been...half an hour, maybe, since they got back, and he can't break his mind out of that cycle. I could have lost him. He's a mess, angry and devastated and terrified and too numb to even cry as he approaches Matt.]

[Every so often, Matt gets instincts where he just knows there's something he has to do, even if it's... possibly not good for his continued existence. This battle was one of them. He was finally up to speed on flying (easier than Iverson made it out to be, thanks dude) and was in his own ship.
It didn't take a genius to realize what was going on, and if someone could ram the ship and throw it off, then Voltron could sweep in. He'd switched his comm to a channel directly to Keith, told him he loved him... and flew off... only to be saved by Lotor, of all people.
Once they all got back, he'd run off, just to clear his head and not have to hear about how stupid he was. However, as always, Keith found him, and he recoils from his words just a bit.]

They're stuck on a planet full of hostile creatures, but the creatures fled at the sight of the black lion, so now he and Adam are settled in front of a campfire, Shiro's hand pressed to the makeshift bandage Adam slapped over his wound. It hurts a little less now that he's had time to rest a bit, but it's comparable to a hurricane softening into a regular thunderstorm.
Years ago, he would say he'd rather die in space, doing what he loved, than lying in a bed helpless and immobile as he waited for death to relieve him of his disease. But today, coming this close to death, all he could think about was Adam, how he wanted to spend the last years of his life with him.
Haggar, those creatures...they could have taken that away. And Shiro senses his former wish is going to come back to haunt him. I'm dying. There's no cure for the disease, we're not going to find one if we haven't found it now...

As they sit by the fire, and Adam is kneeling by it, poking to keep it going, he can't help but keep glancing over to Shiro, worried. He's not ready to let go yet, doesn't want to break the string again so soon.

[Blades must remain in control at all times, no matter what they're feeling. Kolivan has basically drilled it into them since day one: emotions are a hindrance, they rob you of focus, and if you lose focus for even a second you may as well wait for the cold embrace of death. No one is exempt from this lecture, even those whom Kolivan knows worry about their lovers during solo missions.

[Day thirty-five. It's almost pathetic how quickly the Garrison believes she's a boy named Pidge Gunderson. Granted, almost anyone who knew Matt has graduated by now, but the one bully who didn't because they were just so useless in the end doesn't even bat an eyelash. This is too easy. Not that Pidge is complaining.
She's also, to her surprise, made some friends. Sort of. She makes a big deal of being a loner who just wants to study, but the guys she's been partnered with have a way of growing on a person. Lance McClain is a brat, but seeing what he's got to put up with makes her feel bad for him.
(Anyone who said she should be more like Matt only gave Pidge something to strive for. But poor Lance is nothing like his big sister and no one lets him forget it.)
Hunk Garrett, on the other hand...something drew her to him. Katie Holt had no interest in romance, she didn't even want to have friends thanks to her classmates picking on her, pulling her hair, using her to copy her homework. But Hunk's such a nice guy, doesn't have an enemy in the Garrison.
And when Iverson started tearing into him in front of the whole class for getting sick in the flight simulator, well, she had to stand up and snap at the jerk. Iverson has her forever hate for being mean to Matt, and for kicking her out, so if standing up for a nice guy gives her an excuse to chew him out, she's gonna take it!]

The same kind she'd seen in Adam when Shiro disappeared after the battle with Zarkon, or Keith when Matt had almost sacrificed himself for Naxzela.
The same feelings welling up in her as she realized they might not survive this battle. Before she could give them a voice, Hunk had yelled out I LOVE YOU, KATIE! I ALWAYS HAVE! and she'd yelled it back without thinking. What her brother felt for Keith, her parents for each other, Adam and Shiro, Allura and Lance.
They survived, though. Somehow, they all survived, and now she's alone with the man she...the man she loves. Yes. With the heat of the moment gone, she still has that same strong, intense feeling as she looks at him.]

[Even though he's used to it by now, having the instructors glare at him every time he flubs an answer or fails a test still stings. Just like it did back home when his middle school teacher had his classmates "tell Lance what he did wrong" on more than one occasion.
Sanda's sharp words and glares hurt the most. Veronica talked her up so much her first year at the Garrison, made him think she was more understanding than this. It's not Veronica's fault, of course, he was stupid enough to think maybe she liked Veronica for being so sharp and wouldn't cut him slack just because he was Veronica's kid brother.
He got in because he did well in the flight tests, but everyone's starting to say it was a fluke because of how clumsy he is in the Garrison's actual simulators. Combined with his grades, it's a miracle he's still here at all.
At least one of his instructors actually treats him like a person and not some deadweight moron. He's still in Adam's classroom, trying to finish some problems everyone else got done with ten minutes ago. And left.]

He got in because he did well in the flight tests, but everyone's starting to say it was a fluke because of how clumsy he is in the Garrison's actual simulators. Combined with his grades, it's a miracle he's still here at all.

[He's not sure how much time's passed when he wakes up. He remembers a fight, Adam calling out to him, falling into space, waking up and collapsing into Adam's arms, and then falling asleep again. At one point, he briefly saw the spirit of his deceased father shaking his head. It's not your time. Go back. Don't put him through the same thing I put your mother through.

[It's not the first time anyone's been late from a mission, so no one's too worried when Regris isn't back when he said he'd be. They know well enough from Thace, Ulaz, and even Sasha's experiences that missions can go awry and sometimes you just barely escape with your life.
It's when Regris does come back that everyone's shocked. He's not alone.

[It was just another ordinary day for the team as they continued to adjust to having Lotor within their ranks. None of them still really trust him, especially Adam and Lance who continually give him the stink-eye. Allura seems to be trying to be pleasant as he continually blathers on about the oh so important friendship Alfor and Zarkon shared.
